Climate protest at Pelosi’s office spurs arrests

(10 Dec 2018) Hundreds of climate activists protested inside the Cannon House Office Building at the office of incoming U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, demanding House Democratic leaders form a select committee for a Green New Deal. The demonstration, organized by the environmental group, Sunrise Movement, led the U.S. Capitol Police to arrest dozens of protesters.   During the arrests, protesters sang, chanted and held up placards outside Pelosi’s office. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has proposed the Select Committee for a Green New Deal, which would focus on creating a plan to battle climate change and push the U.S. toward a carbon neutral economy. Sunrise Movement says more than 20 Democratic lawmakers in the House are backing the proposal. Monday’s sit-in was peaceful, and there were no signs of any protesters putting up any resistance as they were arrested.  Before the sit-in, Sunrise volunteers spent several hours on lobbying lawmakers on Capitol Hill.
