Celebrity Eclipse Antarctica Cruise day 10: Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas)

Many years ago I read in a magazine on board a plane that there were 5 species of penguins in the Falkland Islands. Since then I have dreamed of visiting this place.
The tiny pier at Port Stanley cannot accommodate any large or medium-sized sea liner. Landing on the Falkland Islands is carried out by lifeboats. One boat can accommodate 100 people. The boarding and disembarking cycle takes 15 minutes. To transport 2,500 people from the liner to land, the procedure must be repeated 25 times. This takes hours. In one of the reviews about a previous cruise, I read the story of a passenger who stood in line for boat tickets at 06:35 and ended up on shore only in the first hour of the day. To avoid such problems, I purchased an excursion on board, even though they cost several times more than on shore. Those who purchase an excursion are delivered to the shore without a queue, exactly at the start time.

So I ended up in a colony of subantarctic penguins (aka gentoo), numbering about 200 pairs. In the crowd of Gentoos, my already trained eye spotted a small group of Magellanics gathered around several chicks. On the hills around the beach sat large and eerie birds, which the guide called southern giant petrels. Sometimes king penguins, the only species that lives on the islands all year round, wander onto this beach, but there were none that day.
Gypsy Cove
The easiest way to meet penguins once you’re in the Falkland Islands. In principle, I was ready to walk here: only 6.5 km from Port Stanley. But there wasn’t much time.
Already at the pier, passengers are greeted by ladies selling tickets to Gipsy Bay. A round trip transfer costs $20. They accept cards, cash, dollars and pounds, but for some reason not euros. A double-decker bus, according to British traditions, will take everyone to the bay in 15 minutes. Magellan penguins build nests here among the grass and memories of Britain’s war with Argentina.
York Bay
Everyone who comes to Gypsy Bay can reach the colony of Magellanic penguins. But not everyone will make it to the subantarctic penguin colony next door. To do this you need to walk 2.5 km along a white sandy beach and cross a couple of dunes. A very beautiful route, where on the way to the penguins you will have to pass hundreds of ducks, seagulls and other birds.
