We’ll know some facts from the history of immigration to the USA. We’ll learn what the Statue of Liberty symbolizes. We can use the new words in your own speech. The Statue of Liberty is one of the most symbolic monuments to freedom in the world and the historical gateway to America. Millions of would-be immigrants who passed through the immigration station on Ellis Island in New York City’s harbour searched for opportunity to begin a new life in their new homeland but they had to meet legal requirement. The Statue of Liberty depicts a woman wearing a crown with seven rays in a loose-fitting robe with a torch in her right hand and a tablet reading “July 4th, 1776” in her left hand. You can see a life-size replica of the statue’s face and foot in the museum inside the statue. Additional information. Between 1492 and 1880 many people came from Britain, Ireland and Northern Europe. Then in the end of the 19th and early 20th century European immigration increased massively and another era of heavy immigration is happening right now. People still come to the USA as they see is as a land of hope and opportunity. The USA is constantly called “a melting pot”. This term means that all immigrants have become alike and have adapted to their new homeland. As a result, Americans are quite informal in their general behavior and in their relationship with other people. For example, people with high social status can wear informal clothes, like jeans, and sandals in public. Working hard is greatly valued in the USA. The expression “a self-made man” is the best praise. Americans respect doers, problem solvers and achievers. Many of them are workaholics who are addicted to their work in the USA. But many Americans know little about the rest of the world. They just think that people in other countries aren’t so lucky as they are.
