Steve Smith performs “Comin’ Up“ LIVE

“Comin’ Up“ is one of Bud Powell’s more open compositions. The A section of the song is based on a rhythmic theme that is perfect for audience participation! The folks at Birdland enjoyed clapping along to this infectious groove. There is a Bridge when playing the head but the solo section is open and based on the rhythmic vamp, along with the players creativity and rapport. The trio called “Bouncin’ With Bud“ was organized by music impresario Milan Simich to play the compositions of Bud Powell at The Birdland Theater in NYC. The trio features Manuel Valera on piano, Lonnie Plaxico on bass and myself on drums. Each set that we played was an adventure, exploring the infinite universe of Bud Powell’s music! - Steve Smith Steve Smith’s Zildjian cymbals: 14” Avedis Hi-Hats, 20” K Mini-Bell, 21” Staccato Ride (main ride) plus a second 21” Staccato Ride (far right).
