Lebanon: Workers block roads in ‘Day of Rage’ protest against rising fuel prices

Lebanese workers participated in a protest-strike called by the unions of the road-transport sector, in cooperation with other labour unions, in Beirut on Thursday. Roads are seen cut off by cars, trucks and minibuses, as well as garbage containers. According to media reports, the demonstrators closed some of the country’s main highways, as well as roads within cities and towns across the country, starting at five in the morning. Taxi and truck drivers used their vehicles to block roads, in protest at the sharp increase in fuel prices, demanding the government provides fuel subsidies and compensation. “What is happening today is that the unions and Syndicates of Land Transport in Lebanon, met to carry out a sit-in protest regarding the promises made by the Lebanese government headed by the Council of Ministers,” said one protester. “From December 1 to today,
