An infantry division of the German Wehrmacht had an artillery regiment with three light artillery divisions - the number of which depended on the infantry regiments to be supported by the division - and one heavy artillery division with three batteries each. Differing from this, the fighter divisions with two fighter regiments had only two light artillery divisions and no heavy artillery division. A battery of field artillery typically consisted of the battery squad with the battery commander in the rank of captain, a lieutenant as observation officer and the computing squad, the communications squadron for setting up and operating the tactical telecommunications networks (telephone/field cable construction squad, radio squads), the gunnery squadron with four field howitzers (A, B, C and D guns), led by a lieutenant as battery officer and a senior sergeant (the sergeant corresponded to the rank of sergeant in the artillery), two gun platoons with two gun groups each, the anti-aircraft squadron with Fla-MG, the calculating squad, a dispatcher and a medic, the ammunition squadron, the combat team under the battery sergeant with the harness master, the weapons and equipment sergeant, a field kitchen team and the baggage team with accountant, shoemaker, tailor and saddler.
Reconnaissance of the area of operations: After receiving the order to deploy from his division (the artillery regiment of an infantry division of the 1st Formation Wave had three light and one heavy artillery division, each division had three batteries), the battery commander contacted the commander of his assigned combat unit-usually an infantry battalion-where he assumed the duties of the artillery liaison officer and made the necessary arrangements, then issued the necessary reconnaissance and deployment orders to his subordinates. The forward observer (VB) at the battery observation post (B post) was considered the eye of the artillery. The reconnaissance of the B-Stelle was therefore usually undertaken by the battery commander himself, in close alignment with the combat force to be supported. It was important to have a commanding view over the main battle line into the depths of the enemy position area as well as good camouflage in order to avoid being discovered. The fire position was reconnoitered by the battery officer with one of his platoon leaders.
