Situated on the Neledina River, the original settlement was known as Saviour on the Hill. First mention of the village dates back to 1518, when Prince Simeon Ivanovich of Kaluga granted land for the building of the Krasnokholmsky Nicholas St. Anthony Monastery ( destroyed after the Revolution). In 1764 Empress Catherine II issued a decree on the confiscation of monastic land, and the village on the hill Spas ceased to be the domain of the monastery.
