Fundamentals of Baroque Counterpoint: Clausulas and Cadences, Part 1

When Northwestern University moved to remote learning once the pandemic hit the U.S.’s shores in March/April of 2020, I intended to create a series of videos for each module in my “18th-century counterpoint“ class. I never completed this massive undertaking, but here is one of the two introductory videos I did make, which focuses on clausulae and cadences as conceptualized in Bach’s day, as well as the fundamentals of invertible counterpoint inherent in these cadences.
