Analytical Instrumentation - Atomic Emission Spectroscopy ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The principle of Atomic Emission Spectroscopy or AES as known commonly is the study of emissions given out by atoms present in the sample. This helps to identify the atoms as well as it’s quantity. In this technique, the sample is first converted into aerosol using an atomiser. This helps break the sample into fine particles. The aerosolized sample is then injected with energy in the form of heat. A flame is employed for this purpose. Once energy is fed to the sample, the atoms take up this heat energy and jump to higher energy levels. The energy levels are different for different atoms. As a result, different energies will be taken up by different atoms. The atoms cannot stay in the higher energy state for quite long. As a result, they travel back to their original energy level and in this process give out energy. The energy given out by different atoms will be different and the energy is released in the form of light photons. These photons have all the properties of a light wave or EMR. As the energy given out by different atoms is different, the wavelength is also unique. When these light photons are measured, a curve of wavelength vs intensity is plotted. From the wavelength, one can determine the type of atom i.e) perform qualitative analysis. The intensity helps to measure the concentration. More the number of atoms, more is the intensity and thus it means more is the concentration and vice versa. This means even quantitative analysis can be performed using AES.
