The Pilatus Cogwheel Railway opened in 1889. With a gradient of up to 48 percent, it is the steepest cogwheel railway in the world and the only one of its kind. The 4,618-meter-long railway from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm is passing alpine meadows and striking rock formations. Since its opening, until today, that has not changed.
