Pyotr Gleb, in the silent role of a terrifying Tsar Ivan, steals each scene he’s in. Filmic opera is a different genre from staged opera. More like Wagner’s conception of Gesamtkunstwerk, it integrates opera, cinematography, acting, set design into a complete whole.
