Lullaby of Broadway - Excerpt - Busby Berkeley

Here’s another favorite, the massive tap sequence from the 13 1/2 minute production number “Lullaby of Broadway“ from “Gold Diggers of 1935.“ Dance Director/Choreographer Busby Berkeley outdid himself with this number. It told the story of a night in the life of a “Broadway Baby“ following her from the time she goes to bed (early in the morning) to her sleeping all day, then going out of the town that night. It’s an early attempt at what the MGM Musicals would perfect over 10 years later: the “ballet“ section of a film that told a story in song and dance, heavy on the dance. This number is as good as the best of the MGM “production numbers to end all production numbers.“ The set is amazingly huge, and all those dancers in sync!
