Game Recap: Penguins vs. Islanders () | Ending the Month on a High Note

Entering this game, the Penguins trailed the second-place Islanders in the standings by exactly two points. A win was important, and it was a team effort. Anthony Angello opened the scoring with his second goal of the season from right beside the net. Jared McCann scored with under two minutes remaining in the opening frame, and McCann’s tally would ultimately stand as the game-winner. Matt Martin scored a power-play goal for the Isles, but it wouldn’t be enough. John Marino and Mike Matheson each recorded the primary and secondary assists, respectively, on Angello and McCann’s goals. Tristan Jarry started the game for the Penguins, stopping all the shots New York threw at him. He did not return for the start of the 2nd period, and Casey DeSmith filled in admirably, allowing only one goal on 20 shots.  Tonight’s win gives the Penguins 25 points in March (12-3-1), the third-best performance over the month of March in team history (2012-13, 30 PTS; 2006-07, 26 PTS).
