С философских позиций высказывания Шри Раманы очень напоминали утверждения последователей адвайта веданты, индийской философской школы, процветающей уже более тысячи лет. Шри Рамана и адвайтины одинаково подходили к большинству теоретических вопросов, но их позиции, касающиеся практики, радикально различны. Шри Рамана защищал самоисследование, тогда как большинство учителей адвайты рекомендовало систему медитации, использующую утверждения интеллекта, что Атман – единственная Реальность. Поскольку самоисследование часто начинается с вопроса «Кто я?», многие традиционные приверженцы адвайты считали высказывание «Я есмь Брахман» ответом и занимали свои умы повторением этого мысленного решения.
