In this video, I’d like to dedicate some time to explore some of the musicians who made up the Canterbury scene and what each of them brought with them into their legendary Jam sessions and meticulously sculpted albums. We’ll try and figure out what the main elements of the elusive Canterbury sound are, and run through a quick who’s who of the members of the bands that comprised the scene.
Among the bands discussed are: The Wilde Flowers, Gong, Soft Machine, Caravan, Matching Mole, Khan, Camel, Hatfield and the North, and more. What really made the scene what it was is owed to the amazing musicians involved: Steve Hillage, Robert Wyatt, Daevid Allen, Richard Sinclair, Kevin Ayers, Mike Ratledge, Pip Pyle, Pye Hastings, Hugh Hopper… The list goes on and on. This video should be treated as an introduction to the scene and is in no sense comprehensive.
All music belongs to the respective bands, and I hope that you’ll go and listen (or relisten) to as many of these groups as you can, It’s an extremely satisfying rabbit hole to go down.
