Even the skyscrapers couldn’t stand! Typhoon Kraton wipes out entire cities in Taiwan
A powerful typhoon struck southwestern Taiwan, causing severe flooding in the port city of Kaohsiung.
The typhoon has forced the island into a second consecutive day of shutdown.
Typhoon Krathon brought strong winds of up to 135 kilometers per hour.
These wind speeds are comparable to a Category 1 Atlantic hurricane.
The typhoon made landfall in southern Taiwan on Thursday afternoon.
The Central Emergency Operation Center of Taiwan reported updates on the situation.
Typhoon Krathon moved slowly along Taiwan’s southern coast before making landfall.
The storm hovered between Taiwan and the Philippines as a Category 4 equivalent.
Taiwan’s president, Lai Ching-te, warned of potentially significant damage from the storm.
Although Krathon has weakened, it still brought heavy rains to Taiwan.
The storm led to school closures and halted the stock market earlier this week.
Hundreds of flights were canceled as a result of the typhoon’s impact.
As of 3:00 PM on Thursday, approximately 100,000 households experienced power outages.
These outages were confirmed by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs.
Krathon delivered between 250 to 500 millimeters of rainfall across large areas.
In some areas, more than one meter (40 inches) of rain fell within a short time.
Additional rainfall of 250 to 500 millimeters is still possible as Krathon lingers.
The slow-moving storm continues to hover near Taiwan, raising concerns.
On Thursday, schools and offices were once again closed across Taiwan.
Over 38,000 Taiwanese soldiers are on standby to assist in emergencies.
The slow pace of Typhoon Krathon has heightened concerns in Kaohsiung.
City officials warned that the storm’s prolonged presence could increase damage.
Mayor Chen Chi-mai urged residents to remain indoors for their safety.
