Jazz Piano - How To Voice The Last Chord On Standards
@PlayBetterJazz This short tutorial teaches you how to effectively voice a chord you’ll encounter at the end of many standards, when the root note of the chord is also the melody note. This can often be tricky and confusing on how to voice properly.
Most beginning Jazz pianists would voice a standard (and cheesy, unhip) Major 6th chord. Don’t do it! This produces undesirable effects and greatly weakens the effectiveness of the chord. There are two main ways to address this:
1. If the melody is fairly high in register, you can play all perfect 4ths descending from the melody. This has open, modern sound.
2. You can just play the 9th and 3rd with the melody note, producing a 6th but with some nice color from the 9th. This opetion works well when the melody note is lower in register and when stacked 4ths would be too low to use.
