Today I have my Gewehr 98 made in 1917 during the First World War at the C.G Haenal factory in Suel Germany The design was a culmination of an iterative design process of Paul Mauser to make the safest and must ruggedly practical Military rifle that he possibly could which after his earlier designs of which most notable were the M1889/90/91 and Experimental M92, M93, M1894, M1895 and the M1896 he brought out this rifle in 1898 as the best of all his designs I’d say he did a pretty good job with the 98 Mauser action as it was the standard infantry rifle of the Imperial German army from 1898 until It was supplanted by the Kar98k pattern rifle In the mid 30s which it in itself is just a 98 action with a turned down bolt handle and shorter barrel not to mention that the core action itself or prominent features thereof form the base for many modern bolt action rifles today! ( the line of when something can be considered a Mauser action gets quite blurry in a modern context so take that statement with a grain of salt ) I’ve been spending some time fixing and assembling the accessories for this rifle almost since the day I bought it and I’m still not quite done getting it working perfectly as the rifle clearly shows its age in areas When I got it it had no sling, cleaning/clearing rod, bayonet, Rear action screw or even a working rear sight I’ve since addressed all those issues but there always seems to be one more thing to fix or buy 😂😅 surplus collecting is a hobby and a chore all at once Hope you enjoyed the showcase cheers
