Architecting Ambient Mesh for Scale - John Howard, Google

Architecting Ambient Mesh for Scale - John Howard, Google Ambient mesh - a new data plane deployment mode unveiled last year - promises to improve Istio’s usability, functionality, and resource footprint substantially. Part of that is fairly obviously: by removing sidecars, we have less components running and therefor less cost. However, it goes far deeper than this. In this talk, I will give an exhaustive view of how Istio architected Ambient mesh from the ground up with scalability in mind, and why we think this will enable Istio to scale well beyond its current limits (more than 1 million endpoints). Come learn the behind-the-scenes details of the what it takes to build a scalable service mesh - from rethinking how Kubernetes controllers are written, designing new configuration protocols, and beyond.
