Black History Month; destroying the myths. No. 1 The Empire Windrush

Every October in Britain, various exaggerations, half-truths and outright falsehoods are trotted out for popular consumption. It is time that some of these were exposed for what they are. The first we shall examine is the idea that in 1948 people from the West Indies were invited to come to Britain and help rebuild a country damaged by the Second World War. This myth, encouraged by the scandal of the ‘Windrush generation’ now has a strong grip upon the imagination of many people in Britain, although it is quite false. ://
