For South Korean women, it’s a tough choice between career or kids
Being a working mom isn’t easy, no matter what country you live in. But in South Korea, women face a particularly tough choice between career and motherhood because of societal pressures such as lack of childcare and discrimination in the workplace. These burdens on working women are a major reason why South Korea has the lowest fertility rate in the world.
The Washington Post’s Tokyo/Seoul Bureau Chief Michelle Ye Hee Lee and Seoul Video Editor Julie Yoon got to know four South Korean women from their 20s through their 50s to learn about the social pressures and structural challenges they face -- and how they’re overcoming them.
