Chinese Olympic Snowboarder Liu Jiayu’s Unlikely Journey | Burton: My Turn

With no snowboarding experience and an athletic background in kung fu, Liu Jiayu became an unexpected Olympic halfpipe star. In 2018, she won the first Olympic snowboarding medal for China. Since then, she has chosen to pursue her own path in snowboarding beyond competition, one that will hopefully inspire an entire generation of Chinese snowboarders. In this episode of MY TURN, our host Selema Masekela joins Jiayu in Whistler, BC, where she’s reconnecting with snowboarding after three years. Selema’s interview digs into her unlikely snowboarding origins and how she is now embracing the freedom of snowboarding to reach her full potential as an athlete. The tracks we each leave behind tell a story, saying, “This is how I do it.” But when we ride, we’re not always on a board, and our turns take many forms. MY TURN gives people from Burton’s community a blank canvas to take their turn, make their mark, and tell their story.
