This is the workshop of a master woodblock carver in Jaipur Rajasthan India.
A huge amount of skill is required to make high quality wood blocks used to print complex patterns on cotton. Many of the hand tools are made by the craftsmen. The wood is usually Sheesham. The craft was in some danger of becoming forgotten but is now thriving again due in some degree to the interest from western markets during the 70’s and 80’s and the support given to the fine printing by the Anokhi company.
