Two Elections, One Border: Where Will US-Mexico Relations Go?

On The Freedom Side LIVE, Thursday, 6/06 at 3pm ET/12pm PT, Eugene and Rania are joined by special guests: Todd Miller - In a draconian violation of international law, President Biden signed an executive order on Tuesday to shut down the US-Mexico border. The order authorizes border officials to immediately deport asylum seekers who do not enter the US through official ports of entry, denying thousands of migrants their legal right to asylum. It also imposes severe limits on asylum requests when 2,500 people on average are arriving at the southern border every day. Todd Miller, an author and journalist specializing in border issues, discusses Biden’s latest capitulation to conservative immigration policy that mirrors Trump’s and how it reflects a wider bipartisan effort to militarize the US-Mexico border. John Ackerman - Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum of the progressive MORENA party has won Mexico’s presidential election in a landslide, becoming the country’s first female president. Sheinbaum pledges to continue the Fourth Transformation project, initiated by her predecessor President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, which aims to fight austerity policies and corruption. John Ackerman, a professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), explains the significance of Sheinbaum’s historic election for Mexico, the region, and the world. Nadya Tannous - The Palestinian Youth Movement announced a new global campaign targeting Maersk, one of the largest shipping companies in the world and a critical link in the weapons supply chain from the U.S. to Israel. Nadya Tannous with PYM explains why pressuring Maersk to cut ties with Israel is integral to stopping the supply of arms backing Israel’s genocide in Gaza completely. Ju-Hyun Park - For the first time in over four years, leaders from China, South Korea and Japan met for a high-level trilateral meeting. Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, – both countries with close security ties to the US – amid rising tensions between the US and China. Ju-Hyun Park, a member of Nodutdol and Engagement Editor at The Real News, joins the show to discuss the key takeaways from the landmark meeting. #breakthroughnews
