Freestyle for Toshi (by DJ Woody)

We often only credit DJ’s for taking the artform to the ‘next level’, but one man who was truly instrumental in the development of the art of turntablism during it’s most creative period was Toshi Nakama of Vestax. Without whom we would have no 05Pro, 06, 07, PDX2000, the Controller One, the list goes on. When I spoke to him, it struck me that he was genuinely interested in listening to turntablists about what we could imagine we might need to push this art form to new heights. Not only did he listen, but he put his money where his mouth was, courageous and creative! What I loved about Vestax as a company, was essentially what Toshi brought to the table. I was honoured to collaborate with him, Vestax and some of the greatest scratch DJ’s on the planet to help create the Controller One turntable, not a commercial success by any means but a new frontier for turntablism all the same.
