Here’s the gist of the true story behind the song: He hadn’t seen her in 10 years when she suddenly greeted him after a show announcing that her husband had passed away. He took this as invitation to rekindle the flame that still burned within them both. His first clue, and a reason to “can’t help but wonder” should have been that when calling her cell phone, even months after her husband’s passing, it was her husband’s voice that was heard when the call went to voicemail.
