Visiting Memphis may be one of the most frightening experiences you could have. The phrase “don’t start none, won’t be none“ applies to any situation in Memphis, meaning that as long as you don’t seek out trouble, you should be okay. Despite this, the narrator drove through the dangerous and rundown parts of Memphis early one morning. The neighborhoods they visited, collectively known as south Memphis, are some of the worst areas in any city the narrator has ever been to. This area is a prime example of how bad Memphis has become, with a violent crime rate up 21% and a murder rate up 38% since last year. Poverty, drugs, and crime are interconnected, with 28% of the Memphis population living in poverty.
