The Five Americans - Western Union (1967) 4K

The Five Americans performing “Western Union“, released originally in 1967. It reached #3 on the Canada Top Singles, #5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and #7 on the US Billboard Cash Box. The members of the band met in 1962 during their studies at the Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant. Here they formed under the direction of lead singer and guitarist Mike Rabon and they performed locally on The Mutineers. In the summer of 1964 they decided to go to Dallas where John Abnak Abdnor of the local record label signed them. By the British invasion on the US market with strange sounding names like The Beatles (the beetles), the band members decided to change the name in 1965 in simply Five Americans. After a number of flops in 1965, the band with the private number “I See the Light“ reached the 26th place of the Billboard as a youth player. Also the next issue, “Evol not loverightly“, came in the top 50. The five subsequent numbers knew not a success. In 1967 they came with the self-penned song “Western Union“, which would be their first and only really big hit. The single peaked at number 5 on the Billboard, and was also released in other countries. In the Netherlands it reached number 19 in the Top 40 and was still a year in the Top 2000. 1967 was the most successful year for the band and also other singles such as “Sound of Love“ and “Good Markings“ achieved with “Zip Code“ for both a 36th place in the Billboard. In 1968, Norman Ezell and John Durrill left and they were replaced by Lenny Goldsmith and Bobby Rambo. The name of the band became out of time and began to work against them. It was tried here yet to change this, by a double-LP to bring out under the name Mike Rabon & The Five Americans. The success stayed out and went after the band apart. The Five Americans’ “Western Union“ is a timeless song with a catchy tune and memorable lyrics. It has a mix of rock and roll, pop, and folk influences that make it a fun and easy listen. The band’s harmonies are tight and polished, and the instrumentation is solid throughout the song.
