Emergency responders break down in tears outside the al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City after members of their crew were killed in a strike targeting the Civil Defense headquarters. Israel has been bombing Gaza as part of its war on Hamas, whose fighters broke through the heavily fortified border on October 7 and killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians. Its response to the worst attack in the country’s 75-year history has been to flatten neighbourhoods in a relentless series of air strikes, killing at least 2,750, most of them ordinary Palestinians.
