Origin of the Eukaryotic Endomembrane System / Trends in Microbiology July 2016 (Vol. 24 Issue 7)
In this video and the accompanying opinion article in Trends in Microbiology, Sven Gould, Sriram Garg, and William Martin discuss how the eukaryotic endomembrane system arose. They propose that the bacterial ancestor to the mitochondria secreted outer membrane vesicles as it became an endosymbiont within an archaeal host, eventually evolving to the eukaryotic endomembrane system.
