James Last - Der rote Sarafan (The Red Sarafan - Красный Сарафан) (1970)

James Last plays the Russian song Der rote Sarafan (The Red Sarafan). This recording was originally done for Last’s 3 LP set Around The World in 1970. Two years later, the track was included in the album Rußland zwischen Tag und Nacht (released in English-speaking countries as Russia or James Last In Russia), which was made to promote Last’s ground-breaking (and sometimes controversial) tour of the Soviet Union in 1972. Although often regarded as a Russian folk song, The Red Sarafan was in fact composed by Alexander Egorovich Varlamov in the 1830s. Last’s version features his full orchestra, including choral voices by the Bergedorfer Kammerchor.
