The title bout was scheduled as the main event of a DAZN broadcast card. Salamov was initially expected to face the WBO titleholder Joe Smith Jr. in October 2021, before the fight was cancelled as Smith Jr. withdrew after contracting COVID-19. Bivol entered the fight as a -2000 favorite to win, while most odds-makers had Salamov as a 1100 underdog.
