Alex Taylor, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of Auckland, describes the experiments reported in “New Caledonian crows reason about hidden causal agents’ (PNAS, 2012). This study suggest tool-making crows have a rudimentary form of causal reasoning. In humans this type of reasoning forms the basis of our scientific and religious thought.
