One of the songs that came from Elvis’ years in the military. While stationed in Germany, he heard the traditional 19th-century Italian song “O Sole Mio“ (Oh My Sun). Elvis recorded it a few months later on April 3, 1960, with lyrics written in under 20 minutes by Aaron Schroeder. In addition to being a success in the States, it went to number one in Britain in November 1960, three months after the US number one, and stayed there for eight weeks, the longest of any Elvis single.
Such a song was quite atypical for Elvis at the time, up to that point he had done mainly rock and roll and rockabilly songs. It marked the beginning of a new era for Elvis, where he sang more traditional and pop songs. His next single “Are You Lonesome Tonight“ written in 1926 was a great success with both young and older audiences.
The amazing stereo soundstage can be credited to sound engineer Bill Porter, who was working for RCA Victor at the time. Most notably, he is responsible for the sound
