WW2 Armor Green Cove Springs 2023 Recap - The Breakout

Now view this! If you missed our last public event ’The Breakout - France 1944’ WWII Living History Event in Green Cove Springs, FL last month, fret not as WW2 Armor member @tankatron7387 has you covered! The ’battle’ began with a German counterattack as part of Germany’s Operation Lüttich which began on August 7th following the U.S. Army’s breakout, Operation Cobra. This specific battle recreated and taught about occurred around Hill 219 to the west of Vire, France, while the Combat Command A of the 2nd Armored Division was conducting retrofit operations following Cobra. At 1630 hours on August 8, German armor supported by infantry attacked 3rd Battalion 66th Armor’s sector of Hill 219 resulting in the destruction of three tank recovery vehicles and three M4 Sherman medium tanks. G Company 66th Armor responded with their Sherman medium tanks supported by armored infantry to fight off and counterattack the attacking German forces. While on a smaller scale, this is the event in which was our focus to teach this weekend along with Operation Cobra and Operation Lüttich. Interested in seeing WW2 Armor in action? Our next public event will take place at D-Day Conneaut Aug. 17-19, 2023 in Conneaut, OH. It is one of the nation’s largest WWII events with nearly 2,000 reenactors/living historians with tanks, artillery, planes, vehicles, landing craft, and Allied/Axis camps. It truly is a phenomenal event and we highly recommend visiting if you have the chance! That is all.
