“I’m Not Supposed to Love You,“ or as we like to call it “Mom’s Song,“ is written by Betty Jean Lewis also known as BJ. She was born in Arkansas in 1946 but moved to Fairbanks and later to Houston, Texas, at a young age. It was Joe Lewis, BJ’s son, who reached out to us and told us that his mom had been writing songs and putting them on paper since around 1974 but no one had previously recorded any of them. Joe inquired if we would be interested in receiving recordings of some of his mother’s songs. He apologized, explaining that she only had access to an old cassette tape recorder and didn’t play any musical instruments. Consequently, the recordings, made at the kitchen table, featured vocals accompanied by some background barking from the yard. It soon became evident that BJ was a remarkably gifted songwriter and singer with pitch-perfect talent, which made it an easy job for JBM (our guitar player) to put complementing chords to the song.
