“Nowhere is safe in Gaza”: Palestinians gather at Rafah border, EU announces humanitarian air bridge

Fleeing Israel’s continuous shelling of Gaza, many Palestinians and foreign nationals flocked towards the Rafah Crossing on Monday, hoping to make it across the Egyptian border. Despite international calls for a humanitarian ceasefire to allow safe passage for aid and those who want to make it out of Gaza, diplomatic efforts to arrange a ceasefire to let aid reach the besieged Gaza Strip have failed. “There is no safety, even when you’re at the crossing you’re afraid. On our way to the crossing they shelled Rafah Street and we started screaming... Nowhere is safe in Gaza,” Gazan resident Hadeel Abu Dahoud said. “We’re coming to the crossing knowing that they won’t open it. No aid, either. For eight days, I swear to god, no electricity, no water, no internet, we can’t communicate or know what’s going on. Seriously, this is not a life.“ In a joint press conference in Cairo, Egypt, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called for humanitarian aid to be allowed to enter the besieged Gaza enclave, while Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry said that Egypt is ready to deliver the aid, receive third country nationals and allow Palestinians in for medical reasons once the Israeli government opens Rafah border from Gaza’s side. Speaking at a separate news conference in Tirana, Albania, European Commission (EU) President Ursula von der Leyen announced the launch of a humanitarian air bridge operation consisting of “several flights“ to Egypt to bring supplies to humanitarian organizations on the ground in Gaza.
