OPERATION TORCH, ALGIERS 1942, AND THE MAKING OF U.S. MIDDLE EAST POLICY

November is a month of memorable Middle East anniversaries, including the Balfour Declaration (1917), UN Partition Resolution (1947), UN Security Council Resolution 242 (1967), and Sadat-to-Jerusalem (1977). But few recall the invasion of North Africa in November 1942, America’s first military deployment in Arab lands since the early days of the republic. On the eve of the seventy-fifth anniversary of a battle that changed the course of World War II, The Washington Institute is pleased to host Robert Satloff and Eliot Cohen for a discussion of whether and how Torch also changed the course of U.S. policy in the Middle East.
