China’s increasing assertiveness in the South China Sea has changed the security dynamic in East Asia. Are the United States and its allies on a collision course with China, or are there ways to avoid the outbreak of conflict? We will explore these with our guest, Jacqueline Newmyer Deal, who has furnished analysis to the Defense Department on East Asian security issues for over a decade.
Deal, an FPRI Senior Fellow, is President and CEO of the Long Term Strategy Group, a Washington, DC-based defense consultancy. For the last decade, she has worked with the Director of the Office of the Secretary of Defense/Net Assessment on projects related to East Asia. Recent studies include an analysis of the security implications of alternative Chinese futures, an assessment of China’s capacity for technological innovation, and a book chapter on China’s energy security strategy.
