VIDEO COMMENTS:
The idea for this AMV was growing on me for quite some time in late 2012/early 2013. I had first heard of the Anime back in 2008 and always wanted to see it, as it was made by who is probably my favorite Anime director, Kenji Kamiyama. After buying the US Blu-Rays at AWA 2012 and noticing with a delight that they were not region blocked, I started watching the show and finished a couple months later. I was generally impressed by the visuals and detail of the animations although those first cheers where tuned down quite a bit when checking the BD footage on my PC later on. Not only were most of the animations done with only 8 frames per second. The US Blu-Ray footage was also in pretty bad shape. Yet nothing my friend mirkosp couldn’t fix. In an unprecedented collaborated effort he taught me a lot about how to really clean footage, restore borders, up- and downscale correctly to achieve a result as beautiful as you see in this AMV. I should add, that he was against making this AMV in 720p and instead suggested the original resolution, which was 576p. However, he supported me when deciding for the more popular resolution.
When making my last touches on Runaway Boy back in 2012 I was already creating this AMV in my head. Back then I just bought Temple of Thought, the latest album of the band Poets of the Fall whom I’ve been following ever since their first Songs Lift and Late Goodbye in 2004.
The Song for this AMV always came down to either Temple of Thought or Morning Tide. I generally preferred the more faster pace of Temple of Thought but liked the lyrics and general Song structure in Morning Tide more. In the end I choose Temple but made some changes to the Song to make it more fitting towards the AMV I had in mind.
I only started editing this AMV in late June/early July 2013, a couple of weeks before the Connichi deadline, while also in a deeper AMV depression. I wouldn’t say this is my best AMV, not by far. I really loved this Idea/Anime/Song and I like the result, but I wish I could’ve done something more worthwhile instead.
When doing the finishing touches shortly before the Connichi 2013 deadline I felt this AMV would need more closure. It appeared to me that doing a short Epilogue with the Song I previously rejected, Morning Tide, would nicely wrap up things. However, due to time constrains/vacation and mixed feedback on the AMV I didn’t feel like editing the epilogue in a long time. I didn’t feel like releasing the AMV either. It was not until after my most recent AMV The Esscence Of Life that I felt confident enough to finally finish Liberation and thus setting me free from this unfinished business. After consulting JadeCharm and ceddic about the last changes i released the final cut for Liberation in late June 2014.
Like with most of my AMVs I try to pick names that reflect what’s happening, thus getting people, who are about to see the AMV for the first time, in the right mood/mindset for what to expect. However, I couldn’t really pin point what that was regarding this AMV. It occurred to me, that Balsa is liberating the Prince from his family, political state and the Water Spirit while also liberating his mind. And that’s where the name comes from.
