Tom Toms, Traps, Lowboys & Hats - Early Kits & Sound Effects

In Part 2 of our series on the history of drums and the development of of these amazing vintage drum kits, we’re looking at a an example of the first professional drum outfit offered by Ludwig & Ludwig in 1922. This was around the time that drum companies realised that the ‘drum kit’ was becoming an instrument in its own right and started to advertise such in their catalogues, Ludwig being one of the first. These kits were very simple with; Snare Drum, Bass Drum and a few ‘Contraptions’ attached, inspired by the sound effects guys working in the theatres and movies of the day. In this video we talk about Jack Foley and his contributions to the art of sound creation in these early days of motion pictures, even showing some clips of ’Foley Artists’ at work. Also we are privileged, once again, to get a peep into the wonderful collection of our friend Tim Northup of ’Northup Drums USA’ who in this episode shows us some of his rare and vintage sound effects/contraptions.
