[CC] Excerpts of Ninoy Aquino on Face the Nation - March 10th 1978 (Updated) WATCH WITH SUBTITLES!!
Excerpts that I could find online of famous opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy“ Aquino Jr. appearing on channel GTV-4’s ’Face the Nation’ (Filipino show, not the US counterpart) on March 10 1978. The full version has not been released yet and I don’t know why. The host was Ronnie Nathaniels, a famous Sri Lankan broadcaster in the Philippines. The three interviewers are (from L-R) Enrique Romualdez (Daily Express), Reynaldo Naval (Times Journal) and Teddy Owen (Bulletin Today).
He was imprisoned at the time by the Marcos dictatorship, and this was a highly notable interview due to his defense and explanations of allegations & smears against him. Juan Ponce Enrile (Justice Secretary and Defense Minister under Marcos) was interviewed by the same interviewers just before Aquino’s segment.
Following the television appearance, a flare of student and civilian demonstrations occurred in protest to the Marcos regime.
Dossier sent by the US Embassy in Manila to the Secretary of State in Washington D.C., USA on the TV appearance:
Persons of interest mentioned in the debate (excluding San Luis, since he was already designated a specific role):
Jovy - Jovito “Jovy“ Salonga, who was a Filipino politician that remained a key figure in Marcos opposition from the beginning of martial law to the EDSA revolution in 1986.
Gerry - Gerardo “Gerry“ Roxas, regarded as one of the best senators in Philippine history. He was president of the Liberal Party when martial law was enacted and remained in opposition to the dictatorship until his death in 1982.
Simeon Del Rosario - Pro-Marcos stooge with several published books in support of the foregone dictatorship.
Victor Corpus - Filipino military officer who defected from the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) to the NPA (New People’s Army of the Communist Party of the Philippines) in 1970. Surrendered to the government in 1976, granted clemency by President Corazon Aquino in 1986.
Orly Mercado - Orlando “Orly“ Mercado, who was a journalist on ABS-CBN prior to martial law. He was charged with subversion by Marcos & was sent to Fort Bonifacio, released in 1975.
Vocabulary:
NPA - New People’s Army (extremist wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, often labelled as terrorists and rebels).
NMPC - National Media Production Center (set up in 1965, it was used during the Marcos dictatorship as part of the regime’s propaganda outlets).
SEATO - Southeast Asian Treaty Organisation (set up in 1954 with US backing, as an Asian NATO).
Batasang Bayan/Batasan - A ’legislative advisory council’ set up by the Marcos regime which would be disbanded months after this Face The Nation broadcast.
LABAN - an abbreviation of “Lakas ng Bayan“, which was the political coalition Aquino ran under during the 1978 Philippine elections. This coalition, consisting of candidates of mixed parties, was made to directly contest pro-Marcos candidates.
His use of the word ’apo’ in the sentence over retiring generals essentially means the man at the top, AKA Marcos. He’s alluding to Marcos as being the respected man on top, as you usually would with an elderly (which is the context apo is often used in). Patriarch was the closest English word I could find in this context however.
When he refers to “bulok“ voting (literally translating to rotten voting), he’s purposefully saying the aforementioned block voting incorrectly. He’s saying block as bulok.
Edited and uploaded for purely historical reasons. This is not an instigator for political arguments on whether Marcos or Aquino were good/bad.
I’m not a great video editor, but I tried to faithfully keep the colors consistent. It proved to be difficult and tedious. Sorry! In particular, the footage was filmed off of a TV set and the colors on that were very hard to correct.
