Africa is the world’s second-largest and second-most populous continent, after Asia in both cases. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers 6% of Earth’s total surface area and 20% of its land area.
With about 1.4 billion people, Africa’s population is the youngest amongst all the continents, the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Population of Africa has rapidly increased over the last 40 years, and is consequently relatively young. In some African states, more than half the population is under 25 years of age. The total number of people in Africa increased from 220 million in 1950 to 555 million in 1990. As of 2022, the population of Africa is estimated at 1.4 billion. This increase in number of babies born in Africa compared to the rest of the world is expected to reach approximately 37%
