Revolutionary Girl Utena AMV about how love will bring you to your knees. This absolutely beautiful song has a lot in common with the metaphors behind Utena’s plot. At its core, Hallelujah is about how faith in God can be the final refuge for a man swallowed by a quiet desperation. God is frequently called upon in this song, but he does not answer. God is the last hope for salvation, but the evidence of his absence mounts all the while. In Utena, the main character (Utena, uh duhhh), sees the prince that saves her as a child as a near-religious figure. She idolizes the prince so much that she overlooks his role in enslaving and torturing Anthy and accepts it as necessary for the world of Otori. As she gets older, she is more critical and rejects the idea that Anthy cannot (or should not) be saved at her own extreme personal risk. Like God in this song, the prince is not coming to save Utena or Anthy, and the meaning of Hallelujah warps into a cold, desperate wish for a happy ending, a tree branch rapping on the warm window of God, aggressively tapping telegrams to no one. On a personal note, this is my daughter’s favorite song by a long shot. I put this on in the car ONCE and from that point on she wanted to hear it all the time. Every night when I put her to bed, we sing the entire song together, her eyes peeking out in wonder from under a warm fuzzy blanket. She is 2 and she knows the words to every verse. “She tied you to the kitchen chair -- she broke your throne and she cut your haaaaiiir“ is her favorite lyric, haha. There is no floor under the ocean of love I have for her. Thanks for letting me delay the launch of this one by two months so it could complete in the exclusive AWA Accolades competition.
