WEAVING LIGHT (INTO DARKNESS) is a heartfelt musical tribute by Setareh Nafisi, inspired by the unwavering spirit of those facing adversity. Nafisi’s composition is dedicated to all individuals who have courageously championed justice and equality.
The piece is rooted in a poignant poem written by Setareh Nafisi herself, providing a poetic foundation for the composition. The metaphor of weaving represents the tenacious struggles of activists, particularly the resilient women in Iran who have bravely resisted years of oppression. Just like the rhythmic movements of a loom, even in the darkest days of Iranian imprisonment, these individuals have managed to weave threads of beauty as a testament to the enduring spirit of hope.
Another Nafisi’s inspiration for this composition is drawn from the influential Iranian filmmaker and poet Farough Farrokhzad’s 1963 documentary, ’The House is Black.’ Farrokhzad’s unapologetic approach in addressing pain and darkness deeply influenced Nafisi. The documentary poetically portrays life in an institution for leprosy patients in the Iranian countryside. Nafisi pays homage to Farrokhzad’s legacy by reciting a poem from the documentary, creating a poignant bridge between the past and the present.
Towards the conclusion of the piece, a smaller ensemble emerges from the choir like a radiant thread of stardust, symbolizing hope and brightness. The delicate finale embodies realistic hope, emphasizing the importance of seeking a steady flame rather than fleeting fireworks to continue the journey. In weaving light through the fabric of the night, Setareh Nafisi beautifully encapsulates the enduring spirit of resilience and hope.
