EN : Smederevo is a Serbian town on the banks of the Danube, 46 km from Belgrade (Serbia’s capital). In Roman times, Smederevo was known as Semendria. During the Ottoman conquest of the Balkans in the early fifteenth century, the Christian rulers of the region suffered many defeats, however Stefan Lazarević managed to maintain a Serb state, in the form of the Despotate of Serbia. Around 1403, he accepted Hungarian suzerainty and established his new capital in Belgrade. More recently, during the Second World War, Smederevo was occupied by the Axis forces (Germany ...), who installed in the fortress of the city an important arsenal. On June 5, 1941, the stockpile of ammunition exploded, shaking the entire city and damaging facilities located nearly 10 kilometers away.
