Following the Nameless Mist stream yesterday, I bring you another early play of another exceptional album from Friday’s set of Fólkvangr Records releases. Arizona-based Kalee Beals’ second album is an ethereal, gossamer woven revelation of blackened folk, ambient indie, gauzy shoegaze, post-metal and other inspired influences elegantly melded into her primally emotive sophomore album that adds equal shades more light and dark to 2019’s Burial Grounds. The range of artists that come to mind each time I play through this album has been quite remarkable – getting flashes of blackgaze like Clair Cassis, Sleeping Peonies, Alcest; then Captured Tracks/Sub Pop/ Cherry Red shoegaze/dreampop bands like Cranes, School of Seven Bells, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Blouse, and the dark-alternate rock of artists like Chelsea Wolfe, King Woman, Emma Ruth Rundle, Anna von Hausswolff – often all simultaneously during the same passages, or subsequent plays.
