According to Adams County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO), this was a self-initiated response by the deputy. There was no 911 call. Surveillance footage from the motel, shows 35-year-old Mario Ortega backing into a parking spot outside the motel. A woman is seen leaving his SUV. An Adams County deputy pulls up in front of the car, immediately pulling out his gun as he exits his patrol SUV. He appears to confront Ortega briefly behind the car. The video shows Ortega backing away from the deputy, holding a gun to his head. Then the deputy shoots him. The deputy then takes cover himself, calling for backup. After the shooting, the deputy and medical personnel treated Ortega who was transported to an area hospital where he was later pronounced deceased. Ortega’s family said that he had a criminal history, but was starting his life over in Greeley. They plan to file a civil lawsuit.
