Rome vs Greeks | Massive Cinematic Historical Battle of Magnesia 190 BC | Total War

The Massive Battle of Magnesia took place on December 190 BC between Rome vs Greeks of the Seleucid Empire. The Roman forces were led by consul Lucius Cornelius Scipio allied with the Pergamene king Eumenes II. The Seleucid army was led by Antiochus III the Great alongside Seleucus IV and Philip. The modern accounts place the numbers of the Roman army between 30,000 and 50,000 and the Greek army between 50,000 to 70,000. As massive battles go, this one fits one of the more massive battles in ancient history. And one as decisive as the battle of Zama. The battle started on the Seleucid left flank as Seleucus IV advanced his chariots toward the Romans. The Roman right flank led by Eumenes II pushed up his skirmishers and peppered the chariots as they approached. This was a decisive error on Seleucus’ side, as his chariots panicked and retreated towards his lines, creating chaos among the cataphracts. Eumenes pressed the advantage and charged his cavalry. After some fighting, the Seleucid left flank collapsed and endangered their phalanx lines in the center which were now engaged in fierce fighting with Lucius Cornelius Scipio. Scipio also had success in the center, although the Greek phalanx held its ground. The Roman javelins were really dealing a heavy blow to the Seleucid lines and most importantly affected the Indian war elephants which was placed in between the phalanx lines. They eventually ran amok after pressure from the skirmishing Roman force and trampled the phalanx formation creating more chaos which Scipio then took advantage of. With the Seleucid center now effectively surrounded by the Romans from their left flank, the phalanx led by Philip start retreating. On the Seleucid right wing, however, Antiochus III had great success in pushing the Roman forces after a successful cataphract charge supported by shield-bearers and light infantry. The Roman left wing was forced to retreat toward their camp. After being reinforced, they were able to stand their ground against the Greek push. Antiochus III, however, was stuck in heavy fighting on the right wing. Unable to reach the center in time to save it from total collapse, he fled the battlefield with the remaining army.
