A hidden camera captured this rare footage of a re-crowned parakeet (kakariki) taking his first flight. This is the first kakariki to fledge in the wild in Wellington City for at least 100 years. The species became exterminated here due to hunting, habitat loss and predators. Fifty-four kakariki were transferred to ZEALANDIA in June 2010 in the hope of establishing a breeding population.
